The building permit issued by the North York Moors National Park Authority is accompanied by a “Section 106” legal agreement between the Authority and the developer to provide for a series of mitigation and compensation measures to offset the impact of the mine on the environment and tourism. Agreed measures include an annual contribution to the financing of landscaping and environmental works; funding for a comprehensive forest planting programme to meet the Authority`s carbon offsetting requirements; financing the promotion of tourism and; provide financial security measures to ensure that funds are available for the restoration of development sites at any time during construction or operation and to ensure reductions and compensation for a period of ten years. Other legal agreements between the developer and North Yorkshire County Council and Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council are in place to secure issues such as improvements to the off-site motorway, additional services on the Esk Valley rail line and measures to promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics in schools and local employment opportunities. Work is underway to meet the requirements of the legal agreements and further updates on progress are being made available at these sites.
