Napagkasunduan ang Paris Accord its CoP-21 noong Nobyembre 2015. On October 5, 2016, when the agreement reached enough signatures to cross the threshold, U.S. President Barack Obama said, “Even if we achieve all the goals… we will only get to part of where we need to go. He also said that “this agreement will help delay or avoid some of the worst consequences of climate change.” It will help other nations reduce their emissions over time and set bolder goals as technology progresses, all under a strong transparency system that will allow each nation to assess the progress of all other nations. NEW YORK (AP) – Apat na buwan matapos magkasundo sa global climate agreement sa Paris, nagtungo ang mga opisyal ng gobyerno sa New York nitong Biyernes para lagdaan ang kaunduan sa isang seremonya sa United Nations kasbaya ng pagdring Earth Day. A new global agreement on climate change was reached on 12 December. The agreement is a balanced outcome with an action plan to limit global warming to a level “significantly below” 2 degrees Celsius and to limit its efforts to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Under the Paris Agreement, each country must define, plan and report regularly on its contribution to the fight against global warming. There is no mechanism for a country to set an emission target for a specified date, but any target should go beyond the previous targets. The United States formally withdrew from the agreement the day after the 2020 presidential election, although President-elect Joe Biden said America would return to the agreement after his inauguration. The Paris Agreement is an ambitious, dynamic and universal agreement. It covers all countries and emissions and is designed for total time.
This is a monumental agreement. It strengthens international cooperation on climate change. It offers a way forward. How each country is on track to meet its obligations under the Paris Agreement can be constantly monitored online (via the Climate Action Tracker and the climate clock). The agreement is ambitious and offers all the instruments we need to combat climate change, reduce emissions and adapt to the effects of climate change.
